Ruined castle of Wartstein

In the high Middle Ages the region of the southern Swabian Jura was borderland between the Staufern dynasty and the Welfen dynasty. The barons of Gundelfingen were adherent to the Staufen dynasty whereas the Welfen dynasty was in possession of the castle of Wartstein situated a bit more to the south. There was a final dispute between Frederick I., Holy Roman Emperor and Henry the Lion (Welfen dynasty) in which the Welfen succumbed. Around 1180 Frederick I. renewed the county of Wartstein. After 1208 the Count of Wartstein built a new castle which still can be found today. It is one of the boldest castles of the Lauter valley. Unfortunately you can only find the frontal wall today which is accessible by a spiral stair and offers a great view.
